Why Goals Alone Won't Help You Thrive

Hello friend,
Last year, one of my goals was to learn more about AI and AI agents.
And to be honest, at first, I did learn — mostly by relying on TikTok’s algorithm. Videos popped up on my For You Page, the right topics found me, and I absorbed bits and pieces along the way.
It was helpful… but passive.

Later in the year though, I decided to do something different. I wanted to be intentional, not just informed.
So instead of saying “I’ll learn more about AI again,” I changed the approach.
I blocked two hours every week in my schedule to learn one new concept, tool, or use case — on purpose, not by chance.
No pressure to master everything. No unrealistic expectations. Just a consistent rhythm.
And slowly, that habit did what motivation never could: it turned a vague goal into real, measurable growth.
That’s the difference between a goal you hope happens and one you build space for.
1️⃣ Why goals without habits don’t stick
A goal can be:
meaningful
well-written
spiritually aligned
…and still go nowhere.
Why?
Because intention alone doesn’t create progress.
Habits do.
Research on behavior change shows that goals tied to specific routines are far more likely to be completed than goals driven by motivation alone (Gollwitzer).
Motivation fades.
Habits carry the work.

2️⃣ The 3 anchors every goal needs

For a goal or project to move from idea to execution, it needs three things:
1. A deadline
Not “someday this year,” but by when.
Deadlines turn ideas into decisions.
2. A clear outcome
What does “done” actually look like?
If you can’t describe it, your brain can’t aim for it.
3. A habit (time in your weekly schedule)
This is the missing piece.
Ask yourself:
When during my week will this happen?
What recurring block of time supports this goal?
What will I intentionally protect or say no to?

Progress lives where time is allocated.
3️⃣ Habits & your Word of the Year

This is why the Goals section inside the Word of the Year template goes beyond wish lists.
For each key area of life — Personal, Spiritual, Health, Finances, Growth, Business / Career / Ministry — you’re invited to define not just what you want, but how it will live in your week.
Your Word of the Year becomes a living rhythm, not a static theme.

Goals aren’t just about where you’re going.
They’re about how you live week by week on the way there.

Until then, ask yourself honestly:
Does this goal have a deadline, a clear outcome, and a place in my week?
I'm rooting for you,
